If AI is middle-to-middle, we need more people ready to own end-to-end.

The more conversations I’m having with developers who are looking for work, the clearer it gets: there’s no better time to think like a product person.

Typically developers have been very focused on the “how.” They made things happen once someone told them what to build. But AI is changing that not by eliminate work but rather it is compressing the work.

AI doesn’t take a story from a “5 points” to “0 points”

It might take it from 5 to 3, or 3 to 2, but never to 0.
You still need a human to start it, and you still need a human to finish it.

AI is the middle. Humans remain end-to-end.

Someone has to prompt the system. (bad data in, bad data out!)
Someone has to review, refine, and reframe the output. (A master editor)
Someone has to connect the dots between what we want and why it matters.

That “someone” is the person with a product mindset.

The human problem AI can’t solve

AI doesn’t take instruction like a person does.
You can’t just “tell it what to do” and expect it to understand context, trade-offs, or customer pain.

It may give you the exact happy path scenario output, but its the moment when things go wrong is when you go looking for a human to solve it.

Think of the master chef and the at home chef. Both may have the same recipe, but when the oven reads 350 degrees but it’s really running hot on a summer day at 375; the at home chef would not know how to handle this scenario where the professional chef will be able to adjust in real time and save the dish. Home chef = AI, Professional Chef = trained product person or developer.

AI can follow a recipe, but it can’t adapt to real-world variables or save the dish when things go wrong. That’s the human-in-the-loop, the master editor.

Humans are end-to-end. AI is middle-to-middle.

AI accelerates what’s already well-defined. But it doesn’t define things for you.
It doesn’t set the vision.
It doesn’t create alignment.
It doesn’t hold accountability.
