A Product Manager's Journey from Confusion to Clarity

Part 5 - Pro Tips and Techniques Product Managers Need to Know

By Jason Abdo

I recently contributed a guest post for The Frictionless Experience team, inspired by my insightful conversation with Chuck and Nick during my appearance on The Frictionless Experience. We delved into the topic of inevitable change, exploring how we can excel at creating predictable and reliable change that adds value for both the organization and customers—in a truly frictionless way!

During the episode, I provided my E3 frictionless product management framework, which all product managers can use to improve the way they create their digital products and experiences.

But going even deeper, mastering advanced strategies can make all the difference between good and exceptional outcomes.

Let’s talk about how necessary proactive user feedback collection can be to ensure you are actually adding value for your customers and allowing them to help drive your roadmap.

One story comes to mind that perfectly encapsulates the importance of mastering one such strategy: proactively collecting and analyzing user feedback.

The Story: When the Launch Isn’t the End but the Beginning

Imagine a product manager, Sarah, leading the development of a new feature for a digital platform—let’s say, a personalized dashboard for users.

After months of research, stakeholder alignment, and positive pre-launch testing, Sarah was confident that this new feature would be a game-changer. Stakeholders were thrilled, customers had voiced their frustrations with the existing dashboard, and the ROI projections were solid. Everything pointed to a slam dunk.

When launch day arrived, the feature went live without a hitch.

But then something unexpected happened—nothing.

The anticipated uptick in user engagement, satisfaction, and conversion simply didn’t materialize.

Sarah’s team scrambled to understand the disconnect. They implemented A/B tests, tried different design tweaks, and adjusted the messaging, but the needle barely moved.

It was only when Sarah decided to shift focus from internal brainstorming to directly asking the users that clarity began to emerge.

They sent out a short, sentiment-focused survey, making it incredibly easy for customers to provide feedback on the new feature.

The results were eye-opening.

Through sentiment analysis, Sarah discovered that while users liked the idea of a personalized dashboard, they found the interface overwhelming and unintuitive.

The very feature meant to simplify their experience was, in fact, complicating it.

Armed with this critical insight, Sarah’s team quickly went back to the drawing board.

They simplified the interface, made the customization options more intuitive, and re-launched the updated dashboard. This time, the results aligned with the original projections—engagement soared, user satisfaction increased, and the forecasted ROI was achieved.

The Lesson: Proactive Feedback Collection

Instead of waiting for users to report issues or suggest improvements, proactively seeking feedback at strategic points in the user journey can provide invaluable insights. This means embedding feedback prompts during critical interactions, such as after completing a task or reaching a milestone.

Unique Aspect: Implementing sentiment analysis on collected feedback allows for real-time adjustments and improvements. This proactive approach ensures the platform evolves continuously based on user needs and preferences, fostering a user-centric development cycle.

Tip: Use sentiment analysis to interpret feedback and make real-time adjustments to your product. The difference between a good product and a great one often lies in how well you listen to your users and adapt accordingly.
